Insurance Discount Report

Wind Mitigation Inspection — Florida

A wind mitigation inspection documents the storm-resistant features already built into your home on the state's OIR-B1-1802 form. Florida insurers are required to credit those features, and for most South Florida homes the discount pays for the inspection several times over in the first year. We inspect the roof by hand, get into the attic to verify the roof-to-wall connections, and fill the form out so your carrier can apply every credit you qualify for.

What we inspect

  • Roof covering: material, permit dates, and Florida Building Code compliance
  • Roof deck attachment: nail size and spacing verified in the attic
  • Roof-to-wall connection: toe nails, clips, single or double wraps
  • Roof geometry: hip, gable, or other — photographed and measured
  • Secondary water resistance (SWR) barrier
  • Opening protection: impact glass, shutters, garage door rating
  • Photo documentation required by Florida carriers on the OIR-B1-1802 form

When to order it

  • Binding a new Florida homeowners policy
  • Annual renewal, or after a rate increase
  • After a new roof, impact windows, or shutters were installed
  • Buying a home and budgeting the insurance line

Frequently asked questions

How much can a wind mitigation inspection save me?
It varies by home and carrier, but South Florida homeowners commonly see hundreds of dollars a year off the wind portion of the premium — often more on a newer roof with impact protection.
How long is a Florida wind mitigation report valid?
Five years from the inspection date, unless the roof or openings change before then.
How much does a wind mitigation inspection cost?
Typically $75 to $150 stand-alone in South Florida, and less when bundled with a 4-point or full home inspection on the same visit.
Do you need to get in the attic?
Yes. Roof deck nailing and roof-to-wall connections can only be verified from inside the attic — that's where the biggest credits come from.
